Innovation in Action: Magna IV Engineering & Trinity Power Develop Custom Test Solution for 50MVA Transformer

February 3, 2025

At Sunbelt Solomon, collaboration between our specialized brands enables us to tackle complex challenges with innovative solutions. A recent project between Magna IV Engineering and Trinity Power—both Sunbelt Solomon companies—is a perfect example of how teamwork and expertise drive success.

Overcoming a Unique Testing Challenge

Magna IV Engineering needed to perform primary injection testing on a 50MVA transformer to verify the Differential Circuit. However, with the current transformers (CTs) located on the transformer bushings, traditional test equipment wasn’t an option. The only way to complete the test was to inject voltage into the primary windings, short the secondary windings, and measure the phase angle currents at the protection devices.

A Custom-Built Test Solution

Recognizing the need for a specialized setup, Magna IV Engineering turned to Trinity Power, who provided:

  • A 480V generator
  • A 480V to 4160V transformer
  • 5kV cable to inject voltage on the transformer bushings
  • High-current camlock cables for shorting the secondary windings

This was an unconventional request—generators are typically used for backup power, but in this case, Trinity Power helped build a fully customized test setup to get the job done.

The Power of Collaboration

This project highlights the strength of Sunbelt Solomon’s integrated approach—leveraging the expertise of our brands to create practical, real-world solutions. By working together, we were able to overcome technical limitations, execute a critical test, and ensure the transformer’s protection system was verified with confidence.

At Sunbelt Solomon, we don’t just solve problems—we innovate to keep power systems operating safely and reliably.
