Portable Substation Bridges Power Distribution Gap While Long Term Solution is Developed

October 10, 2024

The Client:

Our customer is one of the world’s largest equipment rental companies with several sites across North America as well as Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Our customer’s services include project planning, delivery, installation, on-site monitoring, removal and more. We are a strategic partner in our customer’s “re-rent” network, and they bring us in to support some of their construction and industrial clients, as well as utility companies, and municipalities. We are a key cog in how they serve their power-HVAC clients as we provide niche rental products that they don’t have readily on-hand.

The Challenge:

Our customer reached out for assistance in providing a temporary power supply solution for a public utility company in Oklahoma. Our customer’s client required an additional 15 MVA of capacity to support a system expansion – and they wanted to ensure there were no power gaps or slow downs during this upgrade. This was a planned outage project, with ample lead time, forecasted to last from 12 to 24 months. Our customer was looking for a complete – and temporary – portable substation that included:

  • 138 kV SF-6 Breaker with Relay Protection
  • 20 MVA – 138,000 Delta to 12,470 Y / 7,200 Transformer
  • 15 kV Vacuum Breaker with Relay Protection and DC Control Power

Our Approach

The industry adage is that no two temporary power solutions are alike. From conception to connection, this project was customized to meet specific application requirements. Our team created a temporary substation that was added to an alternate feeder, which bridged the gap until the permanent solution could be completed. This allowed our customer’s client to upgrade their system and expand their facility, without disruption to their business and power distribution. Beyond providing specialized power rental equipment and having our teams build it to specification, we were also able to deploy our in-field service team for the overall set-up to ensure everything was installed and running properly.

The Result:

Our team was able to work together on a turnkey rental power solution for our customer, who was then able to meet their client’s needs and expectations. The project was successfully deployed in mid-April of 2023. We look forward to updating this post with more details on the success of this project after the contract is complete. Stay tuned!
