20 MVA Mobile Substation Deployment: a case study about integrated teams delivering a large scale rental in just 3 months

March 26, 2025

A large Utility company needs to do maintenance while maintaining uninterrupted service: How Sunbelt Solomon and its family of companies provides a complete turnkey temporary solution in record time.

Timeline: January

When a valued field service customer called with a specific challenge the teams at Sunbelt Solomon jumped into action. The challenge: need for a large mobile substation that could be put into service while a utility company does maintenance on their regular substation. The request came in for a specific unit, a 20MVA mobile unit. Our Field team quickly connected with our Rentals division who began the search once equipment specifications, onsite requirements and timelines were confirmed. The Rental team researched the Sunbelt Solomon inventory across the country to locate a potential solution for the customer. A 20MVA mobile substation was identified in KS as the perfect unit to support the customer’s needs and pulled out of the yard and into the shop for assessment. After field teams did a thorough review, it was clear that the unit needed new HV bushings, components typically subject to extended lead times. Our customer needed the unit in March and we couldn’t wait

Timeline: February

The rental and shop teams did more research utilizing our vast inventory and located the requisite HV bushings within existing inventory at a PA facility. The mobile substation was on the move again delivering this oversized 80 foot unit to PA for rush reconditioning services. Coordination between the PA team and our engineering team in Canada created all new unit drawings to ensure accurate documentation. The reconditioned mobile substation was ready to roll.

Timeline: March

With a brief storage stopover in SC, ready and waiting for the customer’s scheduled turn-over time, the reconditioned substation was delivered to its final destination on the gulf coast and was commissioned into use by the Sunbelt Solomon field services team.

Offering full lifecycle solutions Sunbelt Solomon’s cross functional teams were able to meet the challenge. The Utility company was able to avoid any down time and keep the power flowing!

History and Sustainability:

The Summer before the utility company had the challenging situation, the Sunbelt Solomon asset recovery team procured a retired mobile substation. One of the many divisions of Sunbelt Solomon, the recovery team focuses on used equipment reclamation and reconditioning; effectively recycling used equipment and bringing it to standards equal to new. The reclaimed mobile substation was delivered to our KS facility for assessment and recorded as part of our yard inventory. The unit was ready for a new life when the call came in from the utility company. Sunbelt Solomon delivered a full lifecycle Solution.
