Maintenance Tips for Electrical Transformers

September 13, 2024

Transformers are an essential and expensive component in many pieces of machinery. To keep your transformer running efficiently, you need to ensure it receives regular maintenance as prescribed by the manufacturer. At Sunbelt Solomon, we are available 24/7 to provide comprehensive repair and other services for all your transformer needs.

Importance of Electrical Transformers

A transformer aids in maintaining the safety and efficiency of power systems by increasing and decreasing voltage levels as needed. Many residential and industrial applications use transformers, as they are beneficial in distributing and regulating power across long distances.

How to Maintain an Electrical Transformer

How often you check your electrical transformer will affect its overall life span and operating capabilities. If you complete maintenance checkups regularly, you will minimize the chance of breakdowns and the subsequent need for major repairs, saving your facility money. Some of the main actions you should feature on your transformer maintenance checklist include:

Daily Transformer Checks

  1. Verify that the oil is at the desired level in the magnetic oil gauge in the primary and conservator tank.
  2. Replace the silica gel if it turns pink.
  3. Seal any detected leaks.

Monthly Transformer Checks

  1. Check the oil level in the oil cap.
  2. Clean the breathing holes in the silica gel to ensure it provides correct breathing action at all times.
  3. Verify that the oil is at the proper level for oil-filled bushings.

Biannual Maintenance

Twice a year, check your transformer for:

  • IFT
  • DDA
  • Flash point
  • Sludge content
  • Acidity
  • Water content
  • Dielectric strength
  • Transformer oil resistance

Yearly Transformer Maintenance

  1. Clean all electrical transformer bushings with a soft cloth.
  2. Examine the oil condition by taking a sample from the drain valve and testing it for dielectric strength and moisture content. If the dielectric strength value is low and the moisture content is high, you need to replace the oil.
  3. Cleanse the interior of all marshaling boxes. Check the function of the illumination and space heaters. It is also wise to tighten the control relay wiring at this time.
  4. Wash the Remote Tap Changer Control Panel, Relay and Control Panel with a proper cleaning agent.
  5. Fill the Oil Temperature Indicator and Winding Temperature Indicator with oil if needed.
  6. Check that the Buchholz and Press Release Device is functioning correctly.
  7. Measure the resistive value of the rizer and earth connection with a clamp on the earth resistance meter.
