How Sunbelt Solomon Manages & Simplifies the Substation Transformer Field Teardown Process

November 2, 2021

Power Plant Station of transformers & wires

With an average service lifespan of 50-60 years, it’s not often that a company has to replace its substation transformer. When the time for decommission and removal does come, however, it’s essential to work with a company that’s mindful of rules, regulations, and environmental impact.

With over 100 years of combined experience and expertise, Sunbelt Solomon is capable of providing a safe, efficient substation transformer field teardown service regardless of where your job site is.

A substation transformer field teardown takes place when a transformer has either failed or become obsolete. Sunbelt Solomon completes the removal of power-class utility transformers and all ancillary equipment through a careful dismantling of the substation transformer.

Our Process

Before beginning any substation transformer field teardown, Sunbelt Solomon works to ensure that your site has all of its requirements and policies met. During the process, our team will hold daily meetings to review the day’s plans and ensure complete compliance.

Generally speaking, a field teardown of substation transformers will include disconnecting the unit and draining its oil. This process is followed by a breakdown of the transformer into smaller parts, which makes it easier for crews to haul away parts from the job site. This breakdown process starts with external equipment, including all of the following:

  • Radiators
  • Insulators
  • Control Boxes
  • Bushings
  • Arresters

Once our crew breaks down the external equipment, we move onto the cutting and removal of the tank. This involves resealing the tank and purging it with nitrogen gas before cutting the welds at the base of the tank and accessing its internal core and coil. We then disconnect the internal equipment and clean up any residual oil using residual oil film.

After removing the internal and external parts, we cut the tank into transportable sizes for shipment to local steel vendors. The next stage of the process is to then remove both the core and coil in a safe, responsible manner. Finally, our team hauls away all of the equipment and provides a detailed clean-up of the site to its original condition.

The Sunbelt Solomon Difference

A few of the major benefits of working with Sunbelt Solomon are both our national network of service centers and our capability to work with sites and transformers of all sizes (including transformers up to 1,200,000 pounds).

The benefit of working with full-time employees is the experience they provide, with Sunbelt Solomon crew leaders combining for over 40 years of decommissioning experience. Not only does this ensure a more efficient teardown, but it also allows businesses to gain benefits from the recovery of materials in their decommissioned power-class transformers.

Another benefit of working with Sunbelt Solomon is our rental and REMAN options. In order to avoid any downtime, we offer a number of different rental options so that your business can continue to operate as normal while we decommission and transport your substation. If for some reason we are unable to repair your substation, we offer numerous REMAN options that can be customized based on the individual needs of your site.
